You’ve probably heard by now... but sitting is being called the new smoking! Standing desks are becoming all the rage in offices across the nation. So why is sitting bad for you? Research has linked sitting for long periods of time with numerous and serious health concerns (read more here). But a more important question is what can we do about it if we have a desk job where it’s customary to sit for 8+ hours a day? Rest assured that the habit of sitting through the whole workday is becoming less common as this issue continues to crop up in the news. If you're concerned that you are too sedentary during the work day, here are some basic tips you can start trying this week:
1. Get up at least once an hour. If you find yourself zoning out or staring blankly at your computer, stand up and stretch, go get a drink of water or leisurely walk to the bathroom. You can also start choosing farther routes to walk around your office.
2. Take the stairs.
3. Break up your day by taking a lunchtime class at CrossFit Exclamation!
4. If you have a wireless headset, take advantage of it (if you don’t have one yet, you should get one). Stand up while you’re on the phone, or even pace.
5. Instead of the traditional desk chair, sit on a stability ball or a stool. With no back support you’re bound to be more mindful of your posture, which means less slouching. These seats will also make you alter your position more often, which is a great thing.
